I called TM about this. Sometimes the program would lock up for half an hour when opening, sometimes lock up for half an hour using the program. They said some machines have an issue with Java but the solution is as suggested, turn off the moving water, under File/preferences.
I'll post again if this solution doesn't work.

> This may not help, but I have an old PC that I'm using TM on and I have to turn off the moving water in the Preferences. Otherwise, the CPU is pegged. You may want to try that just to get some CPU cycles back.
