But LDAP can do more than just auth. A interface similar to SimpleXML
could be useful. I.e.:

$ldap = new Zend_Ldap('localhost');
foreach($ldap['o=My Company']['c=US']->filter('(|(sn=S*)
(givenname=S*))') as $entry) {
echo $entry->givenname . "\n";
}
?>
Maybe it could also be made without depending on the LDAP module,
which is not enabled by default.
