Isn't the flash on gumstix NAND flash?
I browsed through the MTD driver and I don't see any bad block routines.
I also don't see any status checking when reading the device.

I don't claim to be a flash expert at all but where's the ECC
management?
This note also claims block 0 is the only one that's guaranteed
out-of-the-box.
