With a few exceptions (certain package types, for example BGA and QFN) there is no reason any good synth tech should be incapable of repairing surface mount boards. It may require some training/practice, some new tools, and parts, but there is nothing technically difficult about repairing the type of surface mount used on the new SEM. The new SEM is primitive in its use of surface mount. Many (all?) of the transistors are even through hole. I wish the myth that surface mount is impossible to rework would go away. I've reworked surface mount boards since the late 80's. This isn't new technology. -Dave |

mount stuff cause it will be harder and harder to make any electronics with through hole technology. The parts are disappearing all the time. Almost all consumer technology is made SMD and SOME of those get repaired. When I made the Frostwave Sonic Alienator, the key chips simply were't available in DIP. Most interesting new chips aren't. paul perry Melbourne Australia |

of through hole to SCD --on reflection it does not sound as bad as I thought Long term service is the most important thing On 4/11/2009, at 12:43 PM, Dave Manley wrote: > Vco3@... wrote: >> HI I won't be buying the new sem due to the surface mount >> construction.
