Gregg,
A good idea - as I have seen much more in other groups, unfortunately,
today there just are too many people who want to "connect" - for one
reason or other. Nothing wrong BUT IMHO you should be at least a
little interested and do your home work before coming to any Internet
group, not too difficult. This group in not even near the worst, the
worst are the worst are the groups which are thought to be "hot" and,
unfortunately again, the groups for people who are supposed to be
experienced on whatever. In those the members have lots and lots of
strange letter after their name or in title but asking questions at
least I would hear from summer interns or maybe (heh!) from a manager.
Unfortunately this is the current trend - to promote yourself, you
company, whatever - try to connect to as many groups / Internet
societies as you can. Fortunately - individual or companies who do
that are easy to detect. The problem, if you don't want to look gruel
(IMHO, nothing wrong in that), getting them to back off can create a
decent amount of work.
have a nice day - tuomo
ps, if you really want to belong to any professional group, do your
homework first - from an "old" systems programmer from times when our
skin was thick and it wasn't because of lack of showering!
