Well Tom, since you asked....please keep in mind I'm going from memory
here.  My back roads map for motorcycling those parts is in my Tank  bag
and not close at hand.  When I attended WCU on Hwy 107 in Cullowhee, NC
for 4 1/2 years some 30 years ago, we would ride south to 64 west from
cashiers to Highlands and it was a blast.  Damn near deadly in a car at
night. Having had a 1971 Suzuki T-500 up there for my time at college
was a blast. It made me appreciate how great and COMFORTABLE the Trophy
is even with the stock seat.  Pulling those hills is a shear joy with
the 1200 BBBB especially loaded and 2 up.

More recently like 10 years ago I started exploring the North GA
mountains about an hour and half south of  Deals Gap (an hour north of
Atlanta).  Usually camping in Hiawasse, GA at the Bald Mtn Park
campground http://www.baldmountainpark.com/.   There are a number of
great roads right close to the park.

Hwy 17 from Helen, GA ( a replica German town (Tourist trap)) to
Hiawasse is a fantastic run.  It's real challenging at night.

Hwy 76 going east from Hiawassee, GA to  441 in Clayton, Ga which
continues as Warwoman rd.
http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/ga_wwr.html connecting with Hwy 28 N
to Highlands, NC is a blast.

Out of Hiawassee, Ga again on 17south, turn right onto hwy 180 southwest
to Suches, GA (Home of Two Wheels Only Motorcycle camp ground)
http://www.twowheelsonly.com/  turn left onto Hwy 60 (I believe there is
a Rock pile there to use as a land mark) to Hwy 19. From there you can
go left or right.  Right takes you to Dahlonega, GA.  Left takes you to
the intersection of 129 & 19 at what is called Turner's Corner which is
a great place to stop for lunch  (Best Monster Burgers, Beer and home
made pies around) and eat on the deck built over the creek.  From there
you can go either way on 129 for good roads. I usually would go to the
right leaving Turner's corner and make my way back towards camp in
Hiawassee, GA on the way back to Hiawasse you want to look for the
Richard B. Russell Memorial Hwy (Ahem Raceway)
http://ngeorgia.com/naturally/cnf.html on your right side and take a
side trip up and back over the ridge.  Turn right back on to Hwy 180 and
go the rest of the way to 17 and back to Hiawasse, GA.  Another great
side trip from 180 south of there is the road up to Brasstown Bald
http://ngeorgia.com/ang/Brasstown_Bald.  It's not for the faint at heart
or inexperienced rider. It is however a great road as it is technical
and you will ride it slow.  To be honest some Trophy riders may have a
problem with it if they can't handle the bike.

I also like riding around Fontana lake and Cades Cove.  I haven't been
there in 30 years on a bike.  I doubt they have moved the mountain or
the road so it should still be good. There are also more roads from that
area towards Knoxville, TN where the Honda Hoot is held each year.  For
a while I had lived in Asheville....there are even more great roads out
that way.
By far though the best concentration of great roads I have found to be
south of Robbinsville between Hiawasse and Dehlonega, GA

Don't get me wrong, the Tail of the Dragon
http://www.tailofthedragon.com/ (US 129) is a great road all the way
from Robbinsville, NC to Marysville, TN. So is the Cherhala Skyway
http://www.cherohala.com/, the problem is those roads have become so
famous and over run with traffic and LEO's (Local Law Enforcement) + the
respective states Highway patrols. The last time I rode the Dragon,
there were no less than 16 Tennessee Highway patrol cars on the road
stopping motorcycles for all sorts of nonsense.  It has become so bad
that the Bike shop on the eastern (NC) side closed up.  The road is also
over run now with Mazda Miatas and other sports cars.  For an 11 mile
stretch of road, it has become an insane ZOO. The 318 curves in 11 miles
make it so you might be able to run at 25-30MPH.

I'll have to dig out my map and find some of the old routes I have
marked on it.  It would be fun to go back and ride there again.  The
beauty of that area is there are so many good roads to chose from.  You
will see lots f BMW riders out there also.  It's one of my favorite
areas of the country, if there was work there for me, I'd live there.
The Mountains are beautiful and the roads are awesome for motorcycling.

Best Regards,

Bob Clark

Bob,
Your recollections are very good. I live just outside Atlanta and ride the roads you spoke of as often as I can. All great two lane Roads in pretty good shape. The Dragon (US-129 is as crazy as you mentioned. Although the TN State Police and Sheriffs have lightened up a bit, they are still watching sport bikes and sports cars very closely. The weekends are still crowded. I won't go there on weekends. weekdays when school is in session is still good riding. North GA has been using a new crack sealer on their secondary roads. These new tar snakes will really get your attention! at near 90 degree (F) the snakes get very limber and if you hit one doing a hard curve your bike will slip about a half inch or so. If your not expecting that little slip it can get quite exciting.

2001 BBBB Oil Filler Cap and Dipstick

This may be a REAL stupid question and the answer is probably very obvious
but can someone tell me when the oil filler cap and dipstick is on my '01
BBBB? On the right side of the bike [while seated on bike] There is a chrome
slotted cap but requires a tool to remove and doesn't have a dip stick. I
know it's just not where I'm looking but HELP!

Ed,

My '03 1200 does not have a dipstick, just an oil sight glass on the LHS. Source of constant frustration to me, as I can rarely judge oil level via the window.

That chrome filler cap opens fine with a big flat blade screwdriver by the way.

Martin.

FYI

On my Trophy the drain plug is a normal bolt, not a hex drive as shown by Haynes.

Hey ED,
I don't think your bike has a dipstick. Down low on the engine case
there is likely a sight glass for doing the oil check. The other hole
must be just to install new oil. The dipsticks are on the left side
engine cases.

I have one and remembered seeing it once Martin mentioned it. I first made
the mistake of looking in my owners manual and it showed the dip stick. The
Golden Years may not be all that great but they sure beat the alternative. I
can still ride and I never get lost. I just change my mind about where I was
going! (;-)

No, no, no Bob - don't start justifying that extra cylinder stuff again!!! Pre about '98 the 1200 also had the dip-stick on the left side and the older style clutch cover - but the extra weight was clearly posing a problem so it had to be removed !!!! Or maybe they were trying to move the centre of gravity back to the middle ????

Sorry - getting late and silly!

f the CG is now back in the middle there should be no problems with
riders dropping their bikes due to the weight being off center.....

Now many of us who ride stay about half a bubble off center anyway.  So
where is the problem with the 1200????

I haven't seen where you posted that you will be at the Trophy Gathering

Oh Bob - much as I would love to because it would be great to meet and the roads sound awesome - it's just too long a haul from here in UK !!

Maybe in the not too distant future, when I can shake off the 9-5, 5 days a week - I'll be able to do some of these things - and then riding in US will be up there on the list. Meanwhile I will make do with UK and European trips.

Enjoy

Philip

When they redesigned the motor for the 98 model they got rid of the dip stick on the 1200.
You also got a bigger alt. easier ass. to the front sprocket.  But no dip stick.
The new motor is the black color.  I think that the 900 still has the dip stick on all models.

96 1200

I've been dreaming of shipping my Trophy over the pond for a tour over there. I work for a company based in Belgium.  Family in Wembly and scattered across Germany.

I really would like to ride some of the roads in the Dolomites and the Alps.....I did it some 30 years ago in a car. The Trophy would Rock!
