Or mechanical. Say a crank that reaches out to an arc of mcroswitches?

I'd just duck off to a car wrecker and pick up a crank-angle sensor.

On the reduce,reuse, recycle theme - if you have an old mechanical
(non-optical :-) mouse, it has the pieces needed.
