Ok,

In east perth, in the middle of Royal St. Offices are (eyballing size) at about
20sqm and 30sqm and about four of these to offer at least, we have about 250 sqm
worth of office space if we go for this. Each office can easily take two desks with
heaps of space, three if you don't need that much, four for the larger. Rooms are
networked and for a small fee net usage can be supplied.

Location has some free parking, cat bus stop right outside, usual amenities, nearby
24 hour deli / subway and close to ecentral.

Would also be running a managed meeting room for use of everyone there.

Looking at about $150 a week dependent on size of office with $1500 upfront to cover
bond. Lease wise we would prefer people to sign up for 12 months, but is open to
negotiation.

Please pass this around, if I can get all four offices in theory "rented" (and I
would prefer to do this for the indies) then it's a shoe in.

You're back in november?  That's cool, the main thing we need to cover right now is
the bond for the place.

ST~

Id like to consider it, though would only use it after hours at this stage. Can help with bond.
What other details do you need from us?

Licensing fonts

I just found out from Ascender Corp that in order to use a font for my
iPhone app I have to pay $3000.

Does anyone know if Arial is actually license free or have we all been
using it with out a license?

Uhmm... considering Apple licensed it for the iPhone I'd be quite

The UI uses Helvetica by default (as does Mac OS X) but you can use the
code here to select a custom font:

http://ajnaware.wordpress.com/2008/10/24/list-of-fonts-available-on-the-iphone/

(the UIFont Class is in the iPhone SDK and has been since 2.0, so we are
"allowed" to use it)

I think the license fee applies to distribution of fonts. If a font is
already on the device, you can probably* assume that the license fee has
been taken care of by the platform holder. If you distribute the font
yourself, then you probably need to license it.

It seems the distribution of font in a game are under license - here's
their speil... I'm gonna draw my own - convert to vector, then make TT
fonts and sell them - f*ckers!

You’ll see this question:

*Q: I want to use Larabie Fonts in my software application. What should
I do?*

A: If you want to distribute Larabie fonts with applications, whether
web-based, or shipping as standalone products for PCs, Macs, game
consoles or other devices, you need an extended use license. Please
contact Ascender Corporation
<http://www.ascendercorp.com/custom/ray-larabie/>. They take care of
Larabie Fonts licensing, including OEM and customized versions.

The license fee to distribute a single weight of a Larabie/Typodermic
font in the TrueType format in unlimited units of a single game title on
just the iPhone platform for the life of the game title is $3,000. If
you only needed to distribute one or two bitmap sizes, the license fee
would be $1,500. If you have more than two bitmaps sizes the license fee
would be the same as the TrueType outline.

This is for worldwide distribution rights and there are no unit
reporting requirements with this license. The license fees include
warranty and indemnification from Ascender Corporation.

I believe you can use the fonts that come with the software - for
example you can use the fonts in Unity or Shiva, but if you use the
fonts in your artwork ontop of buttons or titles you have to pay the
license fee afaik

Yes - if you open Photoshop, add a text element that uses "My Expensive
Font" and make a title screen, the put that screen in a game - you have
to pay for the license.

That is not correct, at least not for many of the Larabie fonts. I use them all
the time in my web games and I've been told explicitly either by Ray Larabie
himself, or someone working for him/wife/secretary, that that usage (fonts
rendered to images) doesn't require a license or any kind of fee. I can dig up
the email where I was told this if you want. I know it's true though because I
usually send him a link to the game when I'm done and he always replies.

As far as I know, a license fee is required on those fonts if you want to
distribute the binary font file itself.

Best,

Chris.

That's correct.  Fees are for when you distribute the binary font file,
and are effectively selling it along with your product.

I've asked the Ascender Corp (who deal with Larabie fonts) to clarify what they mean by "distributing fonts", but their license says this... (and why would make a game that contains fonts you can then download and use elsewhere????)

"The license fee to distribute a single weight of a Larabie/Typodermic font in the TrueType format in unlimited units of a single game title on just the iPhone platform for the life of the game title is $3,000. If you only needed to distribute one or two bitmap sizes, the license fee would be $1,500. If you have more than two bitmaps sizes the license fee would be the same as the TrueType outline.

But you aren't distributing the fonts... are you?

If you render all the glyphs to a texture which you include in the game,
that *might* be distribution. That above certainly doesn't appear to
cover the "making images with the fonts" example.

If, on runtime you take the existing OS font and render it to a texture
- is that distribution?
