Well I have looked at http://www.shatters.net/celestia/ and deep in
it's code base may be hidden the answer to that and several other
related questions. Or perhaps here,
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Celestia

You may be able to solve the entire problem domain by encapsulate a
K-3D scene in the Celestia Universe so as to generate the required
environment data and environment map for rendering. I don't yet know
enough about Celestia's internals to know if it can be done.
