Thanks Ben.
Yes, there has been some discussion. Actually, just now in IRC, Jakob
Hilden (jhilden) and I were discussing icons. Hold off on this update
for notification, there's a chance that this icon won't be used, at
least not in it's current state. The option will likely be added to
the Options dropdown menu.
Jakob's going to work Björn to do a test with the icons. Let Jakob
know if you'd like to participate.
As far as the best place to discuss, I'd say here on the -devel list.
Here's the transcript from the IRC discussion I just mentioned.
[2:43p]
jhilden: sure, i got time for icons
thumb: first, here's the current status
thumb: the sidebar icons, or view icons are, or soon will be up-to-
date with Ben Dunkle's new versions
thumb: most of those icons represent view options: slideshow,
fullsize, parent album, item comments
thumb: the one exception right now is the notify module, which adds an
icon to save a watch/notify request or remove it
jhilden: where can i see that?
thumb: enable the notification module, visit an album
thumb: the icon is currently a pair of eyeglasses, once i figure out
git, it will be replace with a bull horn
jhilden: ok
thumb: thought on the bullhorn was that it symbolize notifications
better than watch
thumb: err, sorry, better than eyeglasses
thumb: eyeglasses, to me, mean inspect
jhilden: agree
thumb: Ben also did an alarm clock icon, but this seemed to have too
serious of a connotation
thumb: we're not warning, we're notifying
thumb: difference in urgency
jhilden: i think bullhorn seems reasonable
thumb: cool
thumb: so that will be added soon
jhilden: it has some similarity to the rss soundwaves, that people
should be familiar with
thumb: yeah, i was thinking the same
thumb: notify is only using email now, but rss may be added in the
future
jhilden: although i think the positioning of that icon is very
unfortunate
thumb: some have suggested using an envelope, but that seemed to
narrow to me
thumb: yes, i think we have a problem with mixing icon placement
between view options and other module actions
jhilden: i feel like on the top right there should only be "view
icons" like slideshow, full size, ...
thumb: i agree with that
thumb: perhaps we drop the icon for notify and put in in the options
menu
thumb: that seems more logical to me
jhilden: i think we should definitely show it when you have enabled
notifications for an album
jhilden: because in the menu you can't see whether it's on or not
jhilden: but for adding notifications in the first place i would be OK
with the menu
thumb: it wouldn't be unreasonable to extend our menu system to
account for that
thumb: i still think that options needs to be moved out of the site menu
thumb: placing it to the right of the album title
jhilden: as you know i couldn't agree more
