A bull horn or alarm clock may work. I think alarm clock might
represent what the notification module does.

What do others think?

Hi,
I;ve posted 2 options for the notify icon-
http://fieldii.com/gallery_icons/ico-watch.png
and
http://fieldii.com/gallery_icons/ico-watch2.png

Either one will need an "unnotify" state; maybe a cross/slash through
the icon--I'm open for suggestions.
Please let me know which one you thinnk works better, or if you have
any suggestions.
Thanks,

Ben Dunkle

Ben,

I think we're going to go with the bull horn icon, seems to convey
what we need better than the alarm clock. The alarm clock may carry a
more serious connotation, i.e. alarm.

One minor comment on the bull horn is that it might be nice to round
the end of the bullhorn cone to conform to the same arc/curve of the
sound waves. This is minor, and maybe not necessary, it's up to you.

Thanks,
Chad

Thanks Ben.

Yes, there has been some discussion. Actually, just now in IRC, Jakob
Hilden (jhilden) and I were discussing icons. Hold off on this update
for notification, there's a chance that this icon won't be used, at
least not in it's current state. The option will likely be added to
the Options dropdown menu.

Jakob's going to work Björn to do a test with the icons. Let Jakob
know if you'd like to participate.

As far as the best place to discuss, I'd say here on the -devel list.
Here's the transcript from the IRC discussion I just mentioned.

[2:43p]
jhilden: sure, i got time for icons
thumb: first, here's the current status
thumb: the sidebar icons, or view icons are, or soon will be up-to-
date with Ben Dunkle's new versions
thumb: most of those icons represent view options: slideshow,
fullsize, parent album, item comments
thumb: the one exception right now is the notify module, which adds an
icon to save a watch/notify request or remove it
jhilden: where can i see that?
thumb: enable the notification module, visit an album
thumb: the icon is currently a pair of eyeglasses, once i figure out
git, it will be replace with a bull horn
jhilden: ok
thumb: thought on the bullhorn was that it symbolize notifications
better than watch
thumb: err, sorry, better than eyeglasses
thumb: eyeglasses, to me, mean inspect
jhilden: agree
thumb: Ben also did an alarm clock icon, but this seemed to have too
serious of a connotation
thumb: we're not warning, we're notifying
thumb: difference in urgency
jhilden: i think bullhorn seems reasonable
thumb: cool
thumb: so that will be added soon
jhilden: it has some similarity to the rss soundwaves, that people
should be familiar with
thumb: yeah, i was thinking the same
thumb: notify is only using email now, but rss may be added in the
future
jhilden: although i think the positioning of that icon is very
unfortunate
thumb: some have suggested using an envelope, but that seemed to
narrow to me
thumb: yes, i think we have a problem with mixing icon placement
between view options and other module actions
jhilden: i feel like on the top right there should only be "view
icons" like slideshow, full size, ...
thumb: i agree with that
thumb: perhaps we drop the icon for notify and put in in the options
menu
thumb: that seems more logical to me
jhilden: i think we should definitely show it when you have enabled
notifications for an album
jhilden: because in the menu you can't see whether it's on or not
jhilden: but for adding notifications in the first place i would be OK
with the menu
thumb: it wouldn't be unreasonable to extend our menu system to
account for that
thumb: i still think that options needs to be moved out of the site menu
thumb: placing it to the right of the album title
jhilden: as you know i couldn't agree more

Hi Ben,

Thanks for doing those icons, they look great.

Would it be possible for you to create another one that represents an
image print module?

Thanks
Tim

Sure, should it be the same size as "comments" and "forums"?

Hi Ben, I'm thinking the same size as the slideshow icon.

Thanks

Here's what I did:

feedback? Trying to make it look like the printer was printing an
image and not text was challenging.

That looks great!  Detail in a small image is hard to do.

I think that looks fantastic.  I wonder, if you added a little color
to the little image, would it make it look more picture like?  Or does
it make it look bad because it is so small?  But I think the Icon
looks great :)

Tim,

A few questions on how this icon will be used. BTW, it looks great.

1. How and wher will it be used? Is it for use on the resize view to
add resized to the cart?

2. Has there been any UI/UX discussion on the add to cart and checkout?

3. I'm a bit concerned about the possibilty of too much clutter with
the addition of buttons. What's been discussed regarding several print
services being enabled?

I think we need to look at implementing something like a second quick-
like menu that we can add these sort of options to before going much
further.

Here are the thoughts based on some irc discussions with Bharat

  1. At this point we haven't created a generalized api, but a specific interface to Digibug.
  2. There is no cart and checkout functionality, this is handled by the digibug web site.
  3. I had originally had the print icon on the current quick pane, when I refactored it to handle automatic overflow to the additions drop down.  Bharat didn't feel it was appropriate there as he felt the quick pane should be reserved for edit type stuff.  And currently, the quick pane doesn't show if you are not logged on (no edit functionality enabled for everybody)
  4. So this icon will be used on the photo page.  If you enable Digibug on the latest version from head, and then browse to a photo, this icon will replace the temporary one that I put there. (which btw doesn't look as nice).

Sure, should it be the same size as "comments" and "forums"?

Hi Ben,

Thanks for doing those icons, they look great.

Would it be possible for you to create another one that

represents

an image print module?

Thanks
Tim
