I don't have any personal experience with organising an event, but I know of three pubs that regularly run general knowledge quiz nights to attract punters (Morley Ale House, Capt Stirling, one on Canning Hwy whose name escapes me). Maybe if you can guarantee a turnout (pre-sold tickets?), you could negotiate no venue cost, and maybe even discounts on drinks?
Anyone who has actually organised an event before care to comment?

We are deciding on whether to go for a licensed venue. Aside from the
demographic (opening up the event to teens and kids), it's also a cost
issue. If we go to a pub, the cheap entry prices ($5) will be
overshadowed by the venue cost and the price of food and drinks.
On the other hand, somewhere like a community centre will be a bit
cheaper (more money for prizes) and we could probably arrange for
people to BYO food and drinks (so entry really is just $5). So it will
also be cheaper for attendees.
