Just realized likely misread your post. I was assuming you were
trying to use a USB keyboard attached to the OTG port with a display
attached to the HDMI port!
If you are trying to enter text to the console session using the
console usb port (which does work with a standard USB cable) then you
may indeed have bad hardware. It is very unlikely in this case that
the USB cable is bad since you are getting the boot messages.
