Sounds like a good idea, and it is easy with Git - just clone and start hacking.
Note, I believe Alexey is still planning to move the repository to
GitHub Real Soon (?). Then, you can make your changes easily public
and sync-able. It is more work for you to publish your branch changes
when it it still on the RubyForge git repo.
