Maybe this has been addressed already but is there any chance of having PostGIS properly handle geometries that cross the antimeridian (+/-180 longitude) and the poles?  See this thread (http://www.nabble.com/polygons-crossing-0-360-longitude-tf1820863.html) for more details.
