I thought this was recently made standard.

It has -- it just hasn't been finalized yet: http://www.w3.org/TR/XMLHttpRequest/

The Web API Working Group[1] is working on a bunch of other cool stuff too, like a selectors API[2] (image a jQuery-like selector engine that's native to the browser!)
