I would go for running your own server (but I have a particular issue with
my data being on other people's servers - YMMV). As an alternative to
funambol you could look at
http://horde.org/sync/ - it doesn't look as
slick/mature/whatever as Funambol, but OTOH it already exists as Debian
packages, which is a big plus for me. (ISTR last time I looked at Funambol
there was an issue with its freeness, but I can't remember what the problem
was.)
