Thanks for the info David.  I kind of know the existence of some (smxi) update scripts, but haven't dig deep for more info.  If I remember correctly, I think there was some script for automated custom nVidia driver compilation, too. I may try those, one of of these days.

Although, I have to admit I feel a little safer with an old (uh... fairly recent) Linux installation around ready-to-go.  Even faster and better than a liveCD because it was fully configured.
