Hmm.. well I can now make it work, but I don't know why...  I copied  
the pdftex.map into the local directory and edited it... then it all  
worked fine.

But no matter how I tried to use the pdftex.map in one of the texmf  
directories (texmf, texmf-var, texmf-dist) etc, it simply didn't seem  
to pick it up..

Oh well.
