Thanks, I was aware of that issue, but I guess I thought it was for a much larger number of open folders. Right now I have about 10 open, and that's about the limit of usability for me. Is this something that will be improved in the future?

Have you checked the FAQ for known issues? http://wiki.macromates.com/FAQ/TextMate2

Most likely cause is having too many folders expanded in the file browser
