You might want to try the plugin from IcedTea which is based on OpenJDK
and gcjwebplugin. It works great for me on x86 and x86_64. See
http://icedtea.classpath.org/ it should also be packaged for the latest
Fedora (8) and Ubuntu (Gutsy) releases. Most discussion about it is done
on the GNU/Linux distro package list:
