An update after further investigation and testing: this appears to be
known bug #398421 in the 2.6.23.1-21 kernel.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=398421It only occurs when writing files to NFS-mounted filesystems, which
probably isn't a common setup for most home users. The workarounds are to
either revert to a 2.6.22 kernel, write to a locally-mounted filesystem
(e.g. /var/tmp) or upgrade to the 2.6.23.8-34 testing kernel. Note that
this bug has been reported to cause file corruption in other graphics apps
as well, such as the GIMP.
