After some trials, I can assure the dvd content is coded the right way.
The problem raised on a few clips with absolutely no sound, for which I used a single channel, 32
kbps AC3 (in order to waste the minimum amount of space) and this is the issue. It seems that a
similar audio is not welcome on some standalone players and they get into troubles. After raising
this bitrate to 128 kbps the video clip became smooth again.
So, there is a lower bound for AC3 data rate in DVDs, isn't it?

In the past I tried using 64 kbps MP2 audio and it was reported that
this didn't work on a Playstation 2.  Raising it to 128 kbps worked.  I
didn't look further for a required minimum.
