That was a cool example! Well done!
One idea that comes to mind is to use a transparent PNG with a
gradient fill as a shadow. I used a similar idea in an example in the
PGF and TikZ examples gallery:
http://www.fauskes.net/pgftikzexamples/transparent-png-overlay/I'm not sure if it will give as good results as your approach though.
