Personally I prefer to use a programme called Autohotkeys (http://www.autohotkey.com/) with this script (OEscript.txt), which re-maps the useless number-pad to handy OE letters.

1=ō/Ō
2=Ū/ū
3=ǽ/Ǽ
4=Ā/ā
5=ē/Ē
6=Ī/ī
7=ð/Ð
8=Þ/þ
9=æ/Æ
/=Ġ
*=ġ
-=ċ
+=Ċ

and numlock becomes a capslock. I've had no problems whatsoever with this method so far.
