This is a very good intro on map/reduce algorithm.

I had a thought that hadoop and map/reduce in general are somewhat limited in the input file, but based on this, it isn't.

You can, and you should be able to use the map/reduce in pretty much any project that takes the independent function to offload the work.

I am involved in heavy complex and real time ETL, and I am hoping to utilize this technology.
