Excellent report, Ben.  Thanks for doing this.

I'd definitely be interested in running your scripts here and doing
some comparisons.

I think the patent issue may be a big problem here -- It would suck to
implement this, run it for a week/a month/a year/a decade then have
someone come at MB with a raft of lawyers.

A quick Google for pro-bono patent lawyer turned up this site:
http://www.pubpat.org/.  I wonder if they'd be willing to help run
patent searches on MB's behoof.
