Hi Saifi, I tried only kchmviewer outta these...
Dunno why but the next page button that appears wasn't working & moreover
the file used to get closed every 15 mins or so...

So I started using ChmSee...It doesn't give any problems :)
The reason I mentioned that...

Hi Saifi, As you mentioned, I went into the synaptic packet manager & also
had a look at their respective docs:

Gnochm:

it is implemented in python

it is integrated with GNOME2

Kchmviewer:

written in C++

it is standalone viewer, depends on Qt only.

ChmSee:

implemented in C

written in GTK+

it uses gecko rendering engine

Xchm:

implemented in C++

and it doesn't support javascript

CHM is a windows Compiled HTMLHelp format.

The rough idea looks like this:
 . take all your HTML files
 . take the images
 . add URL links to HTML files
 . generate cross indexes
 . compress all the stuff above in a tree-like
   structured storage format

Instead of having a bunch of files, you have a single .chm file.
CHM have been optimized for reading and searching.

A good idea about the format can be see here
http://www.russotto.net/chm/chmformat.html

thanks
Saifi.
