I had the very same problems with versions 5-7. I would end up  
tweaking the Xorg config file each time I upgraded. That was not the  
case in the latest Jaunty  9.04 it installed without a hitch and my  
graphics chip is the ATI mobility 900.
If you haven't tried the latest release I'd suggest that you download  
it and give it a try again. As another option Yellow Dog Linux, based  
on Fedora, is compiled for ppc, Sony Playstation (it has the motorola  
ppc processor) may work for you
