At this point, neither end is indicating corruption, state unknown,
etc. and I can turn on and off the load as desired and MH sees what is
happening. I think I can move forward.

Bugs are ok, I just need to know the workaround...

Nearly correct. This is the first step. The second is to have on of the
other buttons (BCDEF) control (activate) the scene and reflect it's
state. This is where the surrogate comes into play (I think).
Lastly, I want to control the state of BCDEF led from MH and from a
different BCDEF button.

I think I included it in the first post. Here is the Insteon section.

Note that I have not tested this on the 'clean' setup. I was hoping for
confirmation or correction prior to another round of tests. Aslo, In
the OP I think I had the code commented out intentionally.

I will try to drag you into/onto 1-wire... You are aware that there are
soil moisture sensors that have been made that use 1-wire protocol? I
know where I live, projections while often accurate to the degree
stated, really don't tell us whether or not our 'spot' will get wet or
how wet it will end up if it does. A well placed soil sensor on the
other hand...
