Subject: lunisolar intercalation wobble

Dear Calendarists:

The ancient Babylonian and Macedonian lunisolar calendars followed the 19-year metonic cycle with 7 intercalations per cycle, but 6 of the intercalations were prior to the spring month, and one intercalation was prior to the autumn month.

Is it possible to reduce the equinox wobble range by using such an intercalation scheme?  (as opposed to only intercalating prior to the spring month)

No, but you can align the average month starts to fit in with both equinoxes.

One way of seeing that the time of year of the intercalation month makes no reduction in the equinox wobble is to think of the equinox month as the first month of the year. Then it does not matter which month of each 13-month year is the intercalary month.  It only matters which of these years is a 13-month year.

Karl
