When mplayer is used to play movies from a network share (here it is samba) the subtitles when they are in a separate file such as .srt are not loaded while it is properly put in place. When the movie file is played locally mplayer loads the .srt file automatically.
The .srt file can of course be specified with -sub smb://path_to_file. But this is laborious and hardly useable when mplayer is launched directly with the mouse click.

mplayerplug-in does not support subtitles from remote servers. Sorry.
