"As of the end of April, 2008, there is only one significant
encumbrance left the sound synthesizer for the Java sound APIs. In
addition, there are several color profiles used in the imaging APIs
that are also encumbered."

so basically everything is open source now, and i'm pretty sure soon
most distros will ship with OpenJDK (which will anyway receive stuff
from GNU classpath i think).

as said, eclipse is a powerful open-source and cross-platform IDE, so
that is definitely an option.
