Since asking is free, here it comes:
Any truly efficient notation method for tuplets should allow you to output the second number in the tuplet. But just as important you should be able to show the rhythmic units in which each number is expressed. There are tuplets, for example those in which the 1st number is smaller, in which the units are different. This is the only correct way to write tuplets, if we want to be consistent with the rule that says that a tuplet means inserting more notes than would be the case without the tuplet. For instance: if I want to insert 3 notes in the place of 5, there are 3 options. Only the last one is really correct:
- You do a 6:5 (in sixteenths) tuplet and then collapse 2 16ths into 1 8th ---> That's what you have to do with ALL notation programs.
- You do 3:5 and accept that the 3 notes are 16th notes (which is incorrect, but also can be done in most programs, like Sibelius).
- You do 3 8th-notes : 5 16th-notes (showing the units), which although the only correct way, isn't allowed by any notation program (except lilypond, but it has to be really hacked, and it is buggy). Every notation package forces you to express the 2 numbers in the tuplet as have the same rhythmic value attached to it. With this constraint, tuplets can never be expressed correctly.
Would be nice if PWGL was the first to treat tuplets the way they deserve to be treated... :)
Maybe in the release after next release?
Take care,
Uri
