great! :-)
then we really will have a 2.10 final this year?

IMO the next release (be it pre- or rc- or .0 ...) doesn't have to be
perfect, it just has to be better than the last pre- or .0 release,
respectively.

right. so I hope we can do this as soon as the build cluster is up again.

and then we should change the numbering scheme and release more often then,
maybe every few month. I propose we just count on when new features are added
(2.11, 2.12, ...), and only add a minor number, when important fixes have
been applied (2.11.1, 2.11.2).
requiring about five years to get from 2.09 to 2.10 is not what I expect for a
piece of free software, that's almost continously developed... ;-)

so break off a new branch at each 2.x release, and only ship 2.x.y
updates from those branches if nasty bugs are found and are easily
backported? and then stop supporting 2.x-1 with those bugfix updates
after the next 2.x.0 is released?

to avoid putting everyone on the upgrade treadmill but making sure the
official $(Ubuntu) package is always <= 3 months old, I'd vote for near-
quarterly releases (plan for 4/year, but accept 2-3 if things get slow).
The 2.x.y bugfix releases I wouldn't mind making monthly (as needed).

more releases are also nice deltas to test against if some regression is
introduced. but of course they do take a finite amount of work.

Now that I think of it, we /could/ call the new release GpsDrive 3.0.
We haven't broken map tile compatibility, but enough has changed, been
removed, and has been added since 2.09 (or 2.10preX) that it doesn't seem
self-inflating to call it that.

yes, 2-4 releases per year depending on progress and features.
bugfix releases as they are needed.

hmm, I think it's a little bit strange to habe thousands of 2.10pre versions
without having a final 2.10.
but looking just at the features, you may be right.
wasn't the "2.x" related to the gtk version?

after that, I was thinking of a 3.0 version too.
navigation will come, and a lot of other things have to be rewritten and
optimized...

What about using 2.10 for the Release containing OSM-Mapnik Support and using
3.0 fot the first Release with real routing?

Sounds good as it's a major addition.

Can 2.10 be kept separate in svn on sourceforge?

As soon as all for 2.10 is ready and consistent I'll put a copy into
        https://gpsdrive.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/gpsdrive/branches/

You might want to have a look at the Debian packages you build:

Unpacking replacement openstreetmap-utils ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/openstreetmap-utils_15034_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite /usr/bin/test', which is also in package coreutils
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

It's not a good idea to be attempting to install a binary called "test". For
a start, it's often a shell built-in command...

The problem started after version 14462.

Thanks for reporting. It was a collission which came from test.py

openstreetmap-applications/utils/import/srtm2wayinfo/test.py

New packages are on the way.

It's still happening. :-(

$ dpkg --contents /var/cache/apt/archives/openstreetmap-utils_15095_i386.deb|grep test
-rwxr-xr-x root/root       875 2009-05-18 07:32 ./usr/bin/test_encoding

Another try, the code for the exclusion was wrong ...

I now also tried to install version 15114 on my system and had no more
conflicts.
