I'm in the same situation. I have the ffdc device as well and have had no success getting the pad keys working. Have you made any progress with this?
If so, please share what you did to resolve the issue. I'm running Ubuntu (Jaunty) with an 'Imon Inside' (no VFD/LCD).

Unfortunatley I have been following a lot of different guides (found by googling) with the assumption that it does not work out of the box, I think all those guides are now quite old. I will look for that conf file and see how that works this evening.
