I'm in the same situation. I have the ffdc device as well and have had no success getting the pad keys working. Have you made any progress with this?
If so, please share what you did to resolve the issue. I'm running Ubuntu (Jaunty) with an 'Imon Inside' (no VFD/LCD).

You know what, I went about everything the wrong way. My device (and I expect yours as it has the same type) works with the standard install (on Intrepid here). the only thing I am, not sure about is that at some point I change the imon.ko driver for one that I found which had the pad2keys patch preinstalled. I really don't know if that is the driver I am now using or if it has since been relaced by the many uninstalls and re-installs I have done. I went looking for the driver bu I can not find it right now.
I think the fix was to use the supplied remote config lircd.conf.imon-pad as Michael suggested.
Anyway my pad keys work, though they are not very nice to use - very spongy and you have to push just right to get the action you want.
