Working with authenticating proxies is generally a pain, but you might find
cntlm [1] useful here. It could be setup on each student's machine to provide
a local/private unauthenticated proxy which automatically authenticates and
forwards connections to another proxy.
It can work with HTTP proxies but also with SOCKS proxies, which means the
proxy it forwards to could even be e.g. ssh with -D.
