I guess what I'm asking is what benefits does it have over running linux directly on my i386 hardware (other than I'm running it on other albeit emulated hardware)?  Is there any linux software or kernel features that take advantage of what the emulated hardware has to offer?  If I write such software, will my code run better/more reliably etc. than if it ran on the underlying i386 linux userland?
