The word "Farkle, or Farkel", started at an ST1100 rally in 1997 held in
Vermont. A fellow by the name of Pete Wells, the organizer, arranged prizes
for various categories. One category was for the ST with the most
aftermarket bits and pieces. This isn't chrome stuff like you would find on
Gold Wings, rather, we are talking functional items like throttlemeister,
high intensity lamps, etc. Items which don't add to the appearance, just
add functionality. This is the important aspect; it can't be junk from the
doo dad isle at Wal Mart or Autozone. I was at the event and at the banquet
Pete explained the lack of a good name to call the functional item category
so he came up with the name "Most Sparkeling Farkeled ST". I recall it was
a half acronym and half word put together but can't remember which ones.
I recall we chuckled at the banquet about the word Pete made up and I'm sure
nobody would have guessed the use would grow legs but I now hear it used on
all sorts of different motorcycle forums and there is now a company called
"Farklemasters".
