There does not appear to be universal agreement (at least not between Soekris and some PoE switch vendors) about what is precisely required for 802.3af interoperability. See:

I've got a net4526, which supposedly supports 802.3af power
over ethernet.
I've got Metrix installed, and everything works fine with
a power adapter, but the board apparently is not working via
POE. No LEDs are lit at all.
