Reading invisible items

Hello,

I am new to the game and this list, though I have played NetHack before.

I have some feedback regarding invisible scrolls. I was able to read
an invisible scroll without having the see invisible ability. Is this
a bug or by design? I think it would make sense to require this
ability in order to read invisible scolls and spellbooks.

Regards,
Mikael

Sorry to take so long to reply to this.

This is by design. Scrolls in Slash'EM are magical objects. You can
invoke them as long as you know the formula regardless of whether you
are blind or the scroll is invisible. Invisible scrolls may make it
somewhat harder to find what the formula is.

Bug 921810 has some discussion on this:

Cheers,

Ali.

OK. That makes sense, though it is not obvious to the player, mainly because the "read" verb is used, and monsters are also described as "reading" scrolls. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes, it's a bit odd. Certainly, reading is involved (it affects
literacy) but it's also interesting to note that you can read scrolls
even if you don't have a mouth (or indeed a head) so clearly it's not
necessary to read the formula out load (though as you point out, you
can hear monsters reading scrolls, so it must be the norm to do so if
you can). I guess it must involve picturing the formula on the scroll
in your mind's eye (if you can't see it) and reading it, sub-vocally if
necessary. Or something like that!

Cheers,

Ali.
