RealTek 8201CL NIC driver request

Hi everybody,

We have been using ThinStation for many years in a elementary school (about 30 terminals with Win2003 server)
Recently, we bought some new PCs with motherboard MSI K9N6PGM2-V with a RealTek 8201CL NIC (see K9N6PGM2-V)

Unfortunately, there is no pre-compiled driver for this NIC (the forcedeth driver does not work). Moreover, I only found this link for such card FreeBSD Device Driver for NVIDIA nForce Network Adapter
I'm not sure it is the correct one !

It would be great to add this NIC to TS-O-MATIC, as I'm not very familar with Linux !
Could someone help me ?

Thanks in advance

Gasel (South France)

Try the r8169 driver (on the DK or USA TSoM's).

Actually add in both the r8169 & the r8168 on the USA TSoM (the MSI site
seems to indicate that it's the r8169, but other linux sites seem to
indicate that it could also be the r8168.....)

Thank you Trevor, but I've already tried this driver and unfortunately, it does not work !
Is there another mean to make this card work ?

Best regards

After my second message? I made sure that the updated driver from
sourceforge was on the USA site.

r8168

Trevor B
I tried both r8169 & r8168, without success !!!
I googled for the 8168 and 8169 NICs and I saw that the RTL 8168 seems to be based on a 8111 chip, as the RTL 8169 seems to be based on a 8110 chip.
In fact, my NIC is a 8201CL.
Furthermore, this NIC is a 10/100 Mbits card while 8111 and 8110 chips are 1 Gbits cards.

Do you think that the link FreeBSD Device Driver for NVIDIA nForce Network Adapter refers to the correct driver for this NIC ? If yes, could this driver be added (when you can, of course...)

Thanks a lot

Gasel

Certainly not. RealTek and nVidia are two different companies and competitors.

Sorry Mike, but on this link, I can see that the MSI K9N6GM (read, I suppose, K9N6PGM) uses a GeForce 6100, a nForce 405 AND a Realtek 8201. So, I suppose that this driver applys to my NIC motherboard. Am I wrong ?

I think so. Probably th MB has two NICs - a Realtek and a nVidia.

<quote from RealTek>
RTL8201, RTL8201BL, RTL8201CL, RTL8201CP, RTL8201N and RTL8211B(L) are
all PHYceiver. That is a driverless hardware device. Software driver
are relative to Network controller ( MAC ) which is integrated into
chipset in such case mostly. Please contact your mother board maker or
chipset manufacturer to obtain proper driver support.
</quote>

So it is either using the nvidia driver (forcedeth is the nvidia
supported nic driver for linux) or another onboard. I thought I had
found out that your board used the 8111B, but I guess I looked at the
wrong page as a revisit didn't show this.... It only shows the nvidia
stuff.

If the forcedeth doesn't work, it's either not using the nvidia mac
(eg. another onboard chip) or the forcedeth driver is too old. In the
seconf case you could try 2.3b2, which has a newer kernel.

Dear Trevor,

Thank you VERY much, because this motherbord works now fine with Thinstation 2.3b2.
The NIC driver is forcedeth.
The sound driver is snd-hda-intel

However, some problems remain :
   - I can't write to USB sticks (rather annoying...)
   - The package www does not work : when I type http://[IP address] the explorer returns "httpd: bind: Address already in use". when I type http://[IP address]:6800 the explorer returns "This page can not be displayed"
   - The video drver is VESA although there is 'package xorg6-nv' in build.conf
   - Sometimes, when I type 'Del' (french keyboard), the task manager appears...

Can you give me some tips ?

Best regards

Gasel

As of keyboard - try relocate session on screen 0. It helped me:

Drop a line if it eliminates your problem.

Thank you Vladimir,

I have modified my thinstation.conf.network and it seems to work (despite of the fact that there is no evident relationship between the screen session number an the keyboard...)
Maybe some thinstation oldtimers know why ;-)

Have a good day

Dear Trevor!

I think this is good proof that there is a need to tweak Thinstation ver. 2.3 beta (and possibly 2.2.X).

No need to waste CPU's cycles for screen 1 output log file. There will be only one "Xorg.0.log" file in "/var/log" directory and in case of debugging no need to waste man's cycles to analyse which file he should look through.

 Vladimir
