Realtime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.So I'm trying to get started with Blue and I'm testing it out on the funky.blue song that comes with it. It doesn't work though. It's probably this error mentioned in the output dialog:
*** Cannot open device 'plughw' for audio output: Device or resource busy Failed to initialise real time audio output The next thing I tried was to drop into the command line and run csound on the resultant .csd file manually. It worked, and I was able to listen to funky.blue that way. This is inconvenient though, so I'd like to get Blue's playback working. I'm using ALSA as an audio driver. I can choose to use the "digital" (dac:hw:0,1) output instead of the "analog" (dac) for my ALSA Audio Out in the realtime renderer options. When I do that it will play but I won't hear anything, and the output mentions numerous buffer underruns. Blue version is 0.125.0 Thanks in advance. The full text in the output dialog is as follows: Localisation of messages is disabled, using default language. time resolution is 1000.000 ns 0dBFS level = 32768.0 Csound version 5.07 beta (float samples) Feb 4 2009 libsndfile-1.0.17 UnifiedCSD: /home/chad/blue/examples/general/tempCsd9187206718205185065.csd STARTING FILE Creating orchestra Creating score orchname: /tmp/filewXMZOB.orc scorename: /tmp/fileLDyb11.sco rtaudio: ALSA module enabled orch compiler: 837 lines read opcode tieStatus i 0 opcode declick a a opcode blueEffect0 aa aa opcode blueEffect1 aa aa opcode blueEffect2 aa aa opcode blueEffect3 aa aa opcode blueEffect4 aa aa opcode blueEffect5 aa aa opcode blueEffect6 aa aa opcode blueEffect7 aa aa opcode blueEffect8 aa aa opcode blueEffect9 aa aa opcode blueEffect10 aa aa opcode blueEffect11 aa aa instr 1 instr 2 instr 3 instr 4 instr 5 instr 6 instr 7 instr 8 instr 9 instr 10 instr 11 instr 12 instr 13 instr 14 instr 15 instr 16 instr 17 instr 18 instr 19 instr 20 instr 21 instr 22 instr 23 instr 24 instr 25 instr 26 instr 27 instr 28 instr 29 instr 30 instr 31 instr 32 instr 33 instr 34 instr 35 LABELS list is full...extending to 10 Elapsed time at end of orchestra compile: real: 0.006s, CPU: 0.000s sorting score ... ... done Elapsed time at end of score sort: real: 0.008s, CPU: 0.000s Csound version 5.07 beta (float samples) Feb 4 2009 0dBFS level = 32768.0 ftable 101: orch now loaded audio buffered in 256 sample-frame blocks *** Cannot open device 'plughw' for audio output: Device or resource busy Failed to initialise real time audio output inactive allocs returned to freespace end of score. overall amps: 0.0 0.0 overall samples out of range: 0 0 1 errors in performance Elapsed time at end of performance: real: 0.027s, CPU: 0.010s Removing temporary file /tmp/file9Ogees.srt ... Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.Hi Chad,
I just read Michael's reply and that seems the first thing to do. If you're still having issues, please reply here and I'm sure we can help work through this. Good luck! steven p.s. - Is there anyone using the pulse audio csound option on linux? I'm wondering if I should update blue's code for that option. Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.Right, I'm using that. The problem is that neither ALSA device in the drop-down actually works. It should work though, since ALSA works for everything else on my machine. Here's a screenshot of what my Realtime Render tab looks like: http://post-boredom.net/realtimerender.png |

Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.Alright. When I do that it gives me this error message:
*** Cannot open device 'plughw:0,0' for audio output: Device or resource busy Also, if I use dac:plughw:0,1 then it does the same thing as dac:hw:0,1 which is to play without erring but produce no sound. Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.Using ALSA like this generally tries to connect directly to the card,
which is easy to get blocked if pulse audio or other sound mixer has acquired it. I'm wondering though, what did you use when you called csound on the CSD you generated? Was it maybe using portaudio? steven On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 1:27 PM, Chad Joan<chadjoan@...> wrote: > Alright. Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.I do this:
csound /home/chad/blue/examples/general/tempCsd7169029547872686312.csd play test.wav So I'm just rendering it to a wav file with csound and then playing it with play.

Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.Hi Chad,
Sorry I didn't get back about this sooner, work has been quite busy. If you're using Gentoo then I assume your level of Linux experience is high. Could you check if you have pulse audio or any other sound server running and turning it off, then trying again? If so, then a possible solution from there would be to use ALSA's dmix plugin and have everything else use that. If you are running a sound server, then there might be a possibility to use the jack or pulse audio csound drivers, though I don't have much experience with those. (There is some info on http://www.csounds.com/manual/html/CommandFlagsCategory.html about those). Let me know if you have an audio server running and I'll try to replicate the setup here. Thanks! steven On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 2:37 PM, Chad Joan<chadjoan@...> wrote: > Gentoo. > > On Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 5:31 PM, Steven Yi <stevenyi@...> wrote: >> >> Hm, I'm wondering what play is using to play the file. Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help."Sorry I didn't get back about this sooner, work has been quite busy."
Don't worry about it. There's no rush :) I know I don't have a pulse audio server running, as I don't have it installed. I don't remember what else might be kicking around, but I ran "rc-status -a" and it seems ALSA is the only thing alive. I've ESounD installed but it isn't active. I'm going to try installing Jack for now and see if I can pipe Blue through that and make it work. Jack seems pretty cool anyways. I'll let you know how it goes. Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.I should have thought of it before, but I just restarted ALSA using "sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound restart" and then tried Blue. It worked with that, at the expense of closing any programs that might be using sound. It still doesn't tell me what was blocking though :/
At any rate, I was able to get Blue's realtime playback working. Now I just need to fix my system so that it works without having to restart ALSA. Thanks for the help and sorry for the bother! - Chad On Thu, Jul 16, 2009 at 3:53 PM, Chad Joan <chadjoan@...> wrote:

Re: Re altime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help. That's one of the frustrating things about Alsa; there doesn't seem to be a good way of looking at what is holding on to which sound devices. I've run into this same problem, and often I have to close down my browser (when it plays Flash content, etc), Rhythmbox, etc. before CSound can play anything. Please help. I should have thought of it before, but I just restarted ALSA using "sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound restart" and then tried Blue. It worked with that, at the expense of closing any programs that might be using sound. It still doesn't tell me what was blocking though :/ At any rate, I was able to get Blue's realtime playback working.

You can find out what processes are using ALSA devices with either
"fuser -v /dev/snd/*" or "lsof | grep /dev/snd". The ones you want to worry about are the /dev/snd/pcm* devices, where pcmCxDxc is capture and pcmCxDxp is playback. JACK is the better option, and cSound can be compiled to use it natively (but I don't know if any of the precompiled packages have it).
