Realtime playback isn't working as Blue seems unable to play sound. Please help.

So I'm trying to get started with Blue and I'm testing it out on the funky.blue song that comes with it.  It doesn't work though.  It's probably this error mentioned in the output dialog:

*** Cannot open device 'plughw' for audio output: Device or resource busy
Failed to initialise real time audio output

The next thing I tried was to drop into the command line and run csound on the resultant .csd file manually.  It worked, and I was able to listen to funky.blue that way.  This is inconvenient though, so I'd like to get Blue's playback working.

I'm using ALSA as an audio driver.
I can choose to use the "digital" (dac:hw:0,1) output instead of the "analog" (dac) for my ALSA Audio Out in the realtime renderer options.  When I do that it will play but I won't hear anything, and the output mentions numerous buffer underruns.

Blue version is 0.125.0

Thanks in advance.

The full text in the output dialog is as follows:

Go into File, Program Options (or something like that). You'll see a Realtime Render tab, and from there you can set which audio devices CSound can use for realtime render, complete with a nice drop-down box for Alsa devices.

Hi Chad,

I just read Michael's reply and that seems the first thing to do.  If
you're still having issues, please reply here and I'm sure we can help
work through this.

Good luck!
steven

p.s. - Is there anyone using the pulse audio csound option on linux?
I'm wondering if I should update blue's code for that option.

Right, I'm using that.  The problem is that neither ALSA device in the drop-down actually works.  It should work though, since ALSA works for everything else on my machine.

Here's a screenshot of what my Realtime Render tab looks like:

Hi Chad,

Could you try editing the string used to say dac:plughw:0,0 ? Or did
you try that already?

Alright.  When I do that it gives me this error message:

*** Cannot open device 'plughw:0,0' for audio output: Device or resource busy

Also, if I use dac:plughw:0,1 then it does the same thing as dac:hw:0,1 which is to play without erring but produce no sound.

Using ALSA like this generally tries to connect directly to the card,
which is easy to get blocked if pulse audio or other sound mixer has
acquired it.  I'm wondering though, what did you use when you called
csound on the CSD you generated? Was it maybe using portaudio?

I do this:

csound /home/chad/blue/examples/general/tempCsd7169029547872686312.csd
play test.wav

So I'm just rendering it to a wav file with csound and then playing it with play.

Hm, I'm wondering what play is using to play the file. Otherwise there
is a pulse audio plugin i think Victor wrote.  What distribution of
Linux are you using?

I also wonder what play is using, but I don't know how to find that out :(

Hi Chad,

Sorry I didn't get back about this sooner, work has been quite busy.
If you're using Gentoo then I assume your level of Linux experience is
high.  Could you check if you have pulse audio or any other sound
server running and turning it off, then trying again?  If so, then a
possible solution from there would be to use ALSA's dmix plugin and
have everything else use that.  If you are running a sound server,
then there might be a possibility to use the jack or pulse audio
csound drivers, though I don't have much experience with those.
(There is some info on
http://www.csounds.com/manual/html/CommandFlagsCategory.html about
those).

Let me know if you have an audio server running and I'll try to
replicate the setup here.

Thanks!

Don't worry about it.  There's no rush :)

I know I don't have a pulse audio server running, as I don't have it installed.  I don't remember what else might be kicking around, but I ran "rc-status -a" and it seems ALSA is the only thing alive.  I've ESounD installed but it isn't active.

I'm going to try installing Jack for now and see if I can pipe Blue through that and make it work.  Jack seems pretty cool anyways.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the help so far!

I should have thought of it before, but I just restarted ALSA using "sudo /etc/init.d/alsasound restart" and then tried Blue.  It worked with that, at the expense of closing any programs that might be using sound.  It still doesn't tell me what was blocking though :/

At any rate, I was able to get Blue's realtime playback working.  Now I just need to fix my system so that it works without having to restart ALSA.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the bother!

Some parts of this message have been removed. Learn more about Nabble's security policy.
That's one of the frustrating things about Alsa; there doesn't seem to be a good way of looking at what is holding on to which sound devices. I've run into this same problem, and often I have to close down my browser (when it plays Flash content, etc), Rhythmbox, etc. before CSound can play anything.

You can find out what processes are using ALSA devices with either
"fuser -v /dev/snd/*" or "lsof | grep /dev/snd".  The ones you want to
worry about are the /dev/snd/pcm* devices, where pcmCxDxc is capture
and pcmCxDxp is playback.
JACK is the better option, and cSound can be compiled to use it
natively (but I don't know if any of the precompiled packages have
it).
