Recording a video stream from the webcam...

Hello everyone,

I need a little help with Red5/Flash and I’m willing to pay for it.

I need a simple browser based flash application that records a video stream straight from the user’s webcam and stores it as a video clip on my server. I’ve seen a few samples but none of them does exactly what I need and my Java/Flash/AS skills are close to zero.

The closest sample to what I need (that I could find) is this post by Carl Sziebert but I wasn’t able to get it running (I’m probably missing some installation steps that may be considered trivial to folks who are experienced with Red5).

All I need is a working sample, whether it is Carl’s or some other, and I can take it from there. I just need to skip the learning curve and, as I said, I’m willing to pay for the help.

If you think you can help me with this, please little ‘r’ me to jf [at] fzula [dot] com.

Thanks in advance,

            Judd

have you already seen the simplerecorder flash demo?

Take a look to my web site to see if it's something similar to what you are looking for: www.tucam.net

Also it's not clear if you need help with flash or with the server, do you have red5 working?

The flash part is based on the red5 demos, I will upload the .fla files to the server and publish the url to get them, but i prefer not to release the php or server java code, but feel free to ask, I am open to contribute to other projects and help people as much as i can (both in terms of time availability and knowledge, I am a red5 beguinner myself)

Here are some facts about my app:

1. I pass token information to flash via parameters passed to the swf, take a look at the html generated code.

2. The tokens have two parts: a file name and a md5 hash. The first part is the "movie name" and is 12 chars long. The md5 hash is calculated from the file name plus a "known password" that is both used in php and the red5 java app. PHP has a md5() function so using it is quite straightforward.

3. In the swf I pass the _root.token as parameter in the netconnection.connect method. some very basic client side logic is included not to even try to connect to the server if there is no token.

4. I check the validity of the token server side, and reject the connection if it is not valid. It's just a matter of taking the first 12 chars of the token, recreating it and comparing the passed token string and the created one.

5. I use different keys to create and check tokens for record and playback

6. I use different scopes to record and playback, this makes things easier in the server logic. At filesystem level I have created a symlink so that app/playback points to app/record

7. Here are some links with info I used for the development:

Let me know if you have specific questions about the php part. I hope this is useful, and BTW, don't hesitate to contact me with feedback about my web.

Hello David,

I was just looking at your website for recording videos using PHP and RED5.

I have been playing around with the recording piece as well but have been struggling with
the PHP token generating portion.

What I want to do is store the generated token in MySQL.

Are you using cookies in your app?

Did you use a tutorial somewhere as your point of reference for developing your app.

I realize you don't want to release any of your PHP code for this app and I understand that
so if you have a tutorial you used for the php side I would appreciate it if you could point me
to the tutorial.

I can figure out the Java part.

Lenny

I plan on doing something like your app wth Flex 2.

Here is the url to my RED5 examples. they have pretty much been done with
Java and RED5.

Hey Lenny,

I have a ton of experience in PHP and Perl.  If I know more about the token you are generating and how you want to interact with the database I can probably help.

I have a database class that my friends and I built for www.thecollegeproject.com that makes it pretty easy to interact with MySQL using associative arrays.  If you let me know more about the problems in php I would be glad to try and help.

My situation is the reverse; I know a lot about PHP and am having trouble learning actionscript.

Hi Charles,

Thanks for your reply.

I haven't done anything yet regarding tokens in PHP.

What I want to do is actually create a recording app similar to either
http://www.flixn.com/   (PHP) or http://www.eyejot.com/ (Java) eyejot on a smaller scale.

Currently I am just researching the best way save a recorded video message and retrieve
it later. Tokens was just one of the ways I was thinking about validating when the video is retrieve.

Regarding actionscript keep plugging. This is good stuff. Any OOP experience in PHP will certainly
be leverage in ActionScript 3.

Regards,

Lenny

Take a look to my web site to see if it's something similar to what you are looking for: www.tucam.net

Also it's not clear if you need help with flash or with the server, do you have red5 working?

Subject: [Red5] Recording a video stream from the webcam...

Hello everyone,

I need a little help with Red5/Flash and I'm willing to pay for it.

I need a simple browser based flash application that records a video stream straight from the user's webcam and stores it as a video clip on my server. I've seen a few samples but none of them does exactly what I need and my Java/Flash/AS skills are close to zero.

The closest sample to what I need (that I could find) is this post by Carl Sziebert but I wasn't able to get it running (I'm probably missing some installation steps that may be considered trivial to folks who are experienced with Red5).

All I need is a working sample, whether it is Carl's or some other, and I can take it from there. I just need to skip the learning curve and, as I said, I'm willing to pay for the help.

If you think you can help me with this, please little 'r' me to jf [at] fzula [dot] com.

Thanks in advance,

            Judd

David,

Thanks for the pointer and your offer to help. That is very kind of you.

I looked at tucam.net and it does look like exactly what I need. And, yes, I did get red5 working with the sample apps that ship with it. What I wasn't able to get working (I didn't spend too much energy on it) is Carl's sample I mentioned in my request for help. It just wasn't clear to me where the different pieces from that sample need to go.

BTW, the tucam sample didn't work for me (it didn't show video and only recorded the audio). I think that is probably because I am using a MacBook Pro with the built in webcam. I've seen similar behavior on other sites. Usually there is a drop-down list to select a video source and I think with the MacBooks one needs to select the USB device. I've seen samples that do that automatically by trying each device until they find one that works.

Thanks again!

I know how that research stage goes Lenny.

We kept track of uploaded files by renaming them when they were uploaded, making that name correspond to a record in the DB that was associated with a project by means of tables using foregin keys.  Initially and without much experience, I figured I could insert images directly into a blob file type in a DB table, but that really isn't how many people do it.  I found in my research that people keep track of the files by means of unique naming coupled with clever database tables.  You'll also have trouble ouputting binary format files if they come directly out of the db.

We used the GD library for image manipulation in PHP.  Its pretty cool and easy to use.

On an unrelated note, for embedding flash videos into a website, I found that swfobject works pretty well with javascript.  I am sure that some of the more experienced developers could give you better tips then I can.

Thanks for all of the help you provide for everyone on here.

For the moment I have tryed to avoid using databases or any other kind of storage shared between php and red5, althoug this will change in the near future, as I would like to store (optionally) some info as title, creators email and comments of recorded videos, and of course show this information in the playback page.

Regards,

Lenny

I plan on doing something like your app wth Flex 2.

Here is the url to my RED5 examples. they have pretty much been done with
Java and RED5.
