To the best of my knowledge there's not another "editor" that plugins in to Netbeans. The code is open source so you can edit it but that's not what you mean.
The Netbeans team is very interested in what you think the failings of Netbeans are. You can post Requests For Enhancements (RFE) at the site and also try to get help here. If you can be more specific about what's bothering you then we might be able to help you.

The Netbeans editor is the worst I've ever used and we are considering moving to Eclipse because its hurting our productivity.
