Request for translationKnoppix 6.2 is now ready for uploading, but as a last, tiny missing detail, I would like to re-add the short and (outside of the compressed image) "windows-readable" information that was present on Knoppix versions prior to 6.0. I have the german and english version ready (it's really not much text, just the basic info), but would like to bring the other languages into sync with the updated text again, too. I could need a little help here. This just applies to index_en.html, the cheatcodes should still be OK if they just stay in english (or not?). Whoever is reading this list and would like to provide a translation for his or her language, is cordially invited to do so. The text license is Creative Commons unrestricted distribution with Modifications Allowed (also for derivates). You can add your name as translator below the title, maybe with a contact email address, if you like to do so. To avoid duplicate work, please post the translated html, or at least a preliminary "working on it [language]" to the list. The translations present in Knoppix 5.3 were: DK ES FR IT JP NL RU but other languages are welcome, too, of course. We would like to release Knoppix 6.2.0 as soon as possible, but incoming translations after the release date can of course be published on the mirrors, the Knoppix website at knopper.net, and in later Knoppix versions as well, so, no real need to hurry right now. The translations which are present before the release, will be added in time. With kind regards -Klaus Knopper
What is KNOPPIX®?KNOPPIX is a compilation of GNU/Linux software, run completely from CD, DVD or flash disk. It automatically detects and supports a wide range of graphics adapters, sound cards, USB devices and other peripheral devices. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, for training courses , as rescue system or as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on fixed disk. Because of its transparent decompression, up to 2 gigabyes of executable software can be present on a CD, and up to 10GB on a single-layered DVD. Licenses and Sources
KNOPPIX is an Open Source project. Most of the programs included are subject to the GNU General Public License, with a few exceptions that are still using "Public Domain" licenses. License texts for each individual package are present at
Source code for KNOPPIX-specific packages is available via the Internet at http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/sources/. You may find the sources for the Debian Distribution, which KNOPPIX is based on, at various Debian mirrors. Alternately, you can order all sources directly from Knopper.Net for the cost of material, copying, packaging and postage. This offer is valid for 3 years, counting from the build date of this CD-Rom/DVD. System Requirements
Starting KNOPPIXIn order to start from CD, DVD or USB flash disk, adjust the boot selection menu or your computers BIOS setup in order to start from the desired device. Everything else works (almost) automatically. Included SoftwareDepending on your choice of CD or DVD, a variety of software packages from the Debian software repositories (www.debian.org) is installed. The CD version contains at least:
The DVD version contains additional software packages for office productivity as well as software development and engineering (various programming languages and development environments), education and gaming. Most Knoppix Mirrors also have a list of included software called Tips & TricksSupport for localization (language, keyboard), expert options and workarounds for problematic hardware is summarized in the Knoppix Cheatcodes. Some of these options require advanced knowledge of the Linux operating system, others are just useful extensions of the KNOPPIX autoconfiguration system. The "favourite" boot options are displayed in the boot screen of KNOPPIX when hitting the F2 or F3 function keys. It is recommended to run KNOPPIX from USB flash disk, since
flash-knoppix is provided in the "Settings" menu when
starting from CD or DVD.

IN SOME COUNTRIES THE CRYPTOGRAPHIC SOFTWARE AND OTHER COMPONENTS ON THE CD ARE GOVERNED BY EXPORT REGULATIONS OR SOFTWARE PATENTS, WHICH MAY FORBID DISTRIBUTION OR DOWNLOAD. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN COMPLIANCE WITH ALL APPLICABLE LAWS. IF YOU PLAN TO COMMERCIALLY USE OR DISTRIBUTE (AND SELL) THE SOFTWARE, YOU HAVE TO ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY LICENSES AND PERMISSIONS FROM ALL SOFTWARE COPYRIGHT HOLDERS OF NON-FREE SOFTWARE COMPONENTS, OR REMOVE THESE COMPONENTS BEFORE DISTRIBUTING THE SOFTWARE. (Possibly caused by a BIOS-flaw on your board, BIOS updates can help.) If your KNOPPIX CD produces strange noises during boot, or you see frequent errors like "cloop: read error", or programs on your KDE desktop keep crashing randomly, then your CD image is probably defective or incomplete, or your CD-burner created a defective CD due to wrong writing speed or bad media. This is the most common error reported. Please boot with "knoppix testcd" to check if the CD is OK. In case of a failing hardware autodetection, try booting with any of the "no-" options as shown in the table above, like in knoppix noagp noaudio noapm noapic nolapic acpi=off pci=bios pnpbios=off nodma nopcmcia noscsi nousb ... to skip some critical parts of the autodetection system. The "noswap" and/or "forensic" boot option is useful for a forensic analysis without touching existing swap partitions. Some Boards apparently don't pass the proper memory size to the linux-kernel. It may cause the message "Panic: cannot mount root file system" and the system hangs. Use "knoppix mem=512M" to solve that problem if your system has 512MByte memory for example (caution: you MUST use a capital "M" here). --- If you need additional modules for starting controllers needed at boot time, just copy the corresponding *.ko files from /lib/modules/* over to /modules in the initial ramdisk (remaster needed). If you place an update*.zip or update*tar.gz file on the medium holding the KNOPPIX data, it will be unpacked onto the overlayed filesystem before starting "init", thus allowing quick reconfiguration of the system. The file "knoppix.sh", if residing in the main KNOPPIX directory, will be execuded after autoconfiguration and before starting the graphical desktop. It can be used in order to start additional services. If you wish to remaster the CD, please don't forget to specify -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table \ -b boot/isolinux/isolinux.bin -c boot/isolinux/boot.cat as option to mkisofs. Otherwise your CD or DVD won't be bootable. The directory KNOPPIX, containig the compressed filesystem file "KNOPPIX", must be located in the top level directory of the CD. Caution: X-Screensaver: Don't start xlock or any screensaver that requires a password. There are no default passwords on KNOPPIX, i.e. all accounts are LOCKED unless you explicitly set a password. See also README_Security.txt about this issue. If you accidentially hit the screensaver button in KDE, switch to one of the textconsoles by Control-Alt-F1 and kill the screensaver (or just set a password for the knoppix user). If you would like to edit your X-Server configuration manually (config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf), use "knoppix 2" to boot into runlevel 2 (textmode only) and, after changing the X configuration, start the X environment with "init 5". Note that you can always leave the graphical environment with "init 2", and restart it later with "init 5". |

Re: Request for translationHello Klaus,
I'm glad to see a new version is coming. I can translate the Spanish version of the index_en.html file and knoppix_chatcodes.txt. I already was the translator of the file in previous versions of KNOPPIX. Best regards. Great, glad to read this. Please send your translation whenever it's ready. Thanks in advance. :-) The index_*.html translation is more important than knoppix-cheatcodes.txt since the first is targeted more for beginners who dont know Knoppix, the latter for experts who like to play with boot options. Re: Request for translationHello Klaus,
I have the italian translation of the index_en.html file ready, but I have some questions for you before sending it: The original file states that: "a program called flash-knoppix is provided in the "Settings" menu"; however in KNOPPIX 6.0.1 the file is located in the "System Tools" menu. If this has changed in KNOPPIX 6.2, please let me know and I will update the translation. The link for the firefox browser is wrong: should be www.mozilla.org instead of www.firefox.org (which seems to be a completely unrelated site). I'm also of the opinion that the cheatcodes file should stay in english only. Though I don't remember having changed the category in the .desktop file, it seems that LXDE sorts the menu entry into "Settings" now, so the description is correct. > The link for the firefox browser is wrong: should be www.mozilla.org > instead of www.firefox.org (which seems to be a completely unrelated > site). You are right! I'm changing this in both the english and german (and french) version, too. Thanks for the hint. > I'm also of the opinion that the cheatcodes file should stay in > english only. If there are translations provided, I will include them as knoppix-cheatcodes_language.txt. But again, I think that the english version of the more "expert" options is sufficient for now. Re: Request for translationI send you the italian translation of the index_en.html file. I have added, under "Tips and Tricks" ("Suggerimenti e trucchi") a short phrase explaining how to start KNOPPIX with italian language and keyboard: Per far partire KNOPPIX con lingua e tastiera italiane, scrivere subito alla schermata di avvio l'opzione: knoppix lang=it (il segno di = si trova in corrispondenza della lettera "i" accentata). You can remove it if you think it is not needed. Regarding the flash-knoppix script I have noted, in KNOPPIX 6.0.1, that it doesn't start properly, complaining about xdialog options: Xdialog v2.3.1 by Thierry Godefroy <xdialog@...> ... ... Usage: Xdialog [<common options>] [<transient options>] <box option> ... ... Hope this is fixed in KNOPPIX 6.2. Regards, Renzo ------------

Good idea, thanks! :-) > You can remove it if you think it is not needed. We have KNOPPIX images with default english and german boot option on the mirrors. Actually, the only difference is the lang= boot option with two bytes of language definition, but just changing this in the image directly in the ISO before burning is not easy for non-Linux users. > Regarding the flash-knoppix script I have noted, in KNOPPIX 6.0.1, > that it doesn't start properly, complaining about xdialog options: This should only happen if no flash media is attached (i.e. /proc/partitions has no sd* entries at all).
