I actually don't think there's any problem with people offering a service to
list members so long as they are otherwise contributing to the community (as
Art certainly does), they do it tastefully, and they quickly take the
commercial discussion back channel. We're all rightfully sensitive to
avoiding open competition with GB since it's an overwhelming sentiment here
to support Stan and Rose and the business. But I think 90 - 100% of what's
been talked about is either non-competitive or began as a collaboration with
GB.

For those that remember, Art's boom room project actually began here at
Stan's urging to come up with a better design.

I bought my boat name lettering from Rik. Still looks great today after a
few years.

Art, I still need to get you the dimensions for the tiller cover... keep
forgetting when I'm at the boat.

Communication on da Rhodes list

Michael,

I defer to Stan and GBI on the credibility and quality of this boat we all own. Unknown to him I referred two credible prospects directly to him at the St Pete show earlier this month. I don't expect letters, candy, or flowers for my honest attempt to help prosper his boat efforts. I will not, however, defer to him on the credibility and quality of the cockpit enclosure or the boat cover or even the PTE.

Michael, with all due respect, you accord special status to the manufacturer of a product. Know that I am the manufacturer, also the designer, and also the worker bee. I am also the risk taker - in a game with loaded dice. Stan does not manufacture canvas, and he is, no doubt very thankful for that. Sometimes it helps to put yourself in someone else's shoes. I need the opportunity to survive this business just like he does, for the good of a fleet that wants choices and viable options.

You have a good point and I don't disagree except (here it comes) in the
case of GBI. After all, this is called the Rhodes 22 list because it is
about the Rhodes 22 sailboat. I believe that Stan (GBI) has a slightly
different place on the list than Art or anyone else for that matter.

This list embodies a group of diverse individuals brought together mostly
through the efforts of Stan, directly or indirectly. It has been my
pleasure to provide information and assistance to other Rhodies, in an
effort to help GBI. This is not to say that I wouldn't help Art succeed,
quite the contrary, but I do not treat the boat manufacturer and an
aftermarket accessory maker in the same way. I believe that this is the
point of distinction.

I think you are looking at that old discussion through Rose (and Stan) colored glasses. Art has a valid point, regardless of the sour grapes which went on between him and Stan. Commercial advertisement is commercial advertisement. If you think Art should only be allowed to direct Rhodes listers to a website, then the rules should apply across the board---Art,Stan, myself, or anyone else.

I also have one connected to the sink drain. It is a Shurflo or RuleMate
similar to this one:

This one is $18, runs on 12V and outputs to 3/4" hose. Sounds about right.

I placed the pump in the front of the centerboard bilge in a low spot in the
cement. I can access it through the "trap door" in the floor near the
bulkhead (under the mast.) I ran power leads back along the centerboard
trunk to the bulkhead at the companionway where I snaked the leads over to
the power panel. The 3/4" hose (clear so that I can see the water as it is
pumped out) is run under the cabin floor and up through a 3/4" hole in the
floor plywood in the corner in front of the sink, behind the galley front
and connected to the 1-1/8" sink drain with a "Y" towards the starboard
drain using a 3/4" to 1-1/8" adapter. The pump is manually controlled by a
switch in the power panel. I never needed an automatic control since it is
a good excuse to get to the boat at least once every two weeks (forces me to
find time to sail.)

I later added a second pump to the lazarette storage area. The pump is
positioned forward of the cockpit floor drain, just behind the foam under
the cockpit floor. The power is snaked under the seats to the companionway
bulkhead and over to the power panel. The drain is connected to the
starboard cockpit seat drain line using a 3/4" x 3/4" "T" fitting. It is
also manually controlled.

The major things that I have found are:
1. Pump must be submersible
2. Pump must be inexpensive since they require replacement every
few years. I have a spare on board.
3. Pump should not draw more than a couple of amps so that it
doesn't kill the battery since I run mine regularly to remove
rain and splash water.
4. Make sure that the outlet is above the water line in case the pump
or the hose fails. You can also service the system while in the
water this way.
5. Don't make any new holes in the hull if not absolutely needed.
6. Self priming design (centrifugal pump).
7. Don't forget to clean debris from inlet screen periodically.

Caesar, Fretless does not have an automatic bilge pump. We keep a sponge
handy to mop up any small amount of water that may find its way into the
bilge. We also have a manual pump we could use if needed. But the only use
we have had for the manual pump is to empty the fresh water tank at the end
of the sailing season. In addition to Rob's problem, an automatic pump
running off the battery can quickly discharge the battery and if there is a
major leak and no one is around the pump becomes useless. Better to check
thru hulls and follow Lee's suggestion to check out the boat often if left
in the water.

I've had for years an Atwood pump with a built in float that works great.
It came with a 3-way switch that has manual, automatic or off settings.
Instead of fussing with the hose loop, I just have a plastic shut-off valve
before the drain tee. The pump is needed mainly when the boat sits in cold
water and the diamond board trunk seal leaks.

Everything I've read says you should have an automatic bilge pump if you keep your boat in the water.

I don't have one because every time it rains I can use it as an excuse to go down to the boat. I'm also less than a mile from my slip and my bilge rarely gets any water in it. My lazarette almost always gets water in it if it rains much, so that's where I'd really need the pump.

So who are you going to listen to; me or all the published experts?

Thanks for your comments Greg. Informal polling in the past has shown
that the group prefers the e-mail list over a forum presentation.
From my perspective, a forum is actually easier to manage than a
mailing list. Email in todays technical environment is just a giant
PITA. It has been suggested in the past that we adopt "tags" in the
subject line to indicate categories. But as we have seen from recent
traffic, that doesn't really work too well. Especially when the topic
wanders away from the original e-mail. It's just too convenient to
hit reply and move on. I am guilty of it as much as anyone.

Best wishes for the holidays and hoping that 2010 is a major
improvement over 2009!

I recommend the book so far its an easy read and he does discuss many
other things besides aviation and the incident last January.

A cover probably won't keep it from breaking since the two that I have
broken cracked at the through hole for the bolt (rotted out). When I
recovered from the fact that they broke (a bit scary at first when under
full sail), I was able to insert the remaining portion in the vertical
plates of the rudder assembly and keep sailing with a shorter tiller and the
bolt removed.

The main problem is that when they start to deteriorate, they become very
rough and the attached hardware (tiller tamer, hiking stick & click, etc.)
loosens up or falls out. Of course, if you cover or varnish the tiller
regularly, I am told that none of this ever happens. I have replaced the
tiller four times in 29 sailing seasons on my '81 and sanded and refinished
it more time than I wish to think about. I have two tillers that I
regularly sand and varnish that I swap during the season (so that I may work
on one while using the other.)

It seems that we need a better material so that I may spend more time
sailing and less time maintaining.

There's really not much editing I've done on the Kindle; in fact I'm not real sure you can. I have done the opposite, transferred a doc I needed for reference to the Kindle from my PC. That's easy and can be handled either via wireless (Sprint's 3G network) for a small fee to Amazon or free via USB. In both cases the doc is emailed to your Kindle through Amazon and is "tranmorgrified" into a Kindle doc. It is a one way trip though.

The Kindle won't replace any of my computers for editing docs, but it has replaced them in terms of reading a doc or referencing a doc while I work on something else (maybe even the doc itself).

I think of the Kindle as a reading device first and foremost with limited, albeit very handy, access to Web info. The more reading oriented that Web info is (like m.ccn.com) the better suited the Kindle is for accessing it. It's not ideal for looking at the weather radar (it's grayscale and doesn't do the time lapse animation), but it's so handy that I still use it for that. Though I must admit, I got a Droid the other day and it may be my quick look at the weather device instead. But the Droid will not replace my Kindle for reading.
