Roadmap

Is anyone actively working on GPE currently? I've been following the project on and off
(trying it on my palmtop/virtual machine), but not too closely.

From the mailing list it looks like all thats been happening recently are bug fixes for the
components used in Maemo/Mer and some talk about a new theme, but not much is
mentioned about progressing towards a future release and improving the parts of GPE
that aren't used by other projects.

It would be interesting to know what the current plans are for GPE. Would be good to
see a new release, but I expect any release would be mostly bug fixes, a new theme
and some of the dependancies updated to take advantage of any new features or
fixes.

Looking forward to your feedback,

Daniel

Thanks, thats a really useful guide. I'm impressed, I expected just a few notes
in a
text document or wiki so to get a pdf document with diagrams and pictures is
really cool.

Will you be releasing the guide under a CC or public domain license? I'm only
asking
as you can't (without paying) edit a pdf so when you plan to release the guide
you
might want to make a .odt version available and mention what license it can be
modified/distributed under.

I've tried following your guide to compile the gpe-calc and the
gpe-mini-browser2. It
was pretty flawless and there were no errors worth mentioning really. So far so
good
(but I'll let you know if I think of something).

On the dependencies side of things for debian/ubuntu the packages are:
build-essential and gnome-devel (if you wanted to make a note of that in the
next
revision)

For the gpe-mini-browser2 I didn't need to do anything different from the other
gpe
software packages except make sure I had the webkit-dev package installed.

However when I was testing the browser it did crash on a few sites (admittedly I
was
trying to stress test it a bit), this might be webkit related or something to do
with
the gpe-mini-browsers error handling but the only output on the console is
"segmentation fault". So maybe on your next revision of the guide you
could add a
section on how to build the packages with the debugging support and how to
find/fix
errors.

I remember seeing that before sometime. I'll try installing/running a complete
GPE
environment in a virtual machine at some point and evaluating GPE properly so I
can
add add any suggestions I think of.

You can, but gnome is now using empathy which I believe which is based on the
telepathy framework and it might be an interesting project for someone looking
to get
involved in GPE to make a frontend which is designed from the start with small
palmtop sized screens in mind.

Talking of creating new programs in GPE it would be nice to have at a later
point to
have section on creating a hello world type application in your guide. I see
there is
a gpe-hello application which is probably there for learning from and it would
be
nice to have a mini walk through on how to write something like that.

Does GPE have an application manager/add and remove software program that is
capable
of using opkg graphically or is that something the distribution has added
separately
from GPE?

I'll add it to my list of IRC channels to sign into occasionally. (when I get
time
which is rare those days).

(Sorry Miguel for sending this to you twice, I forgot when replying to check the

It's a brief for GPE compilation, new sections must be added on a future.

I have not think license of document but it will be one of both
licenses (CC / public). Document is develop with
LaTeX, a "text language similar to html".

It would be interesting add gpe-mini-browser to the doc

Ok

I think florian is working with this app.

Yes

OPKG has console apps only
