I don't know how Thorsten handled that part. I suppose what we have to do in
the end is wait for the final rosegarden.ts and then convert it to .po, offer
them a copy of that for their teams to work on, and convert the results back
to .ts. It's not ideal, but it seems worth trying as an experiment.

His idea with this is to farm out the languages we don't have anyone
maintaining, and see what GTP can do with those translations. Russian
definitely should not be on the list. This is only an experiment to see what
we can do with languages like ca, cy, et, eu, id, ja (actually, Ribbon will
probably show up at the last minute and take care of that one), nl, pl, and
zh_CN.

The idea is that maybe we can get all of the translations maintained without
having to chase people down, since we have traditionally had a lot of trouble
keeping anyone responsible for a particular language over time. A lot of
these from the bottom of the translation readiness list are translations that
someone got mostly complete for some particular release along the way, and
then abandoned thereafter, with no one else ever coming along to pick it up.

You apparently have knowledge of GTP, and you've been our Russian translator
forever, so if you have an opinion about any of this, please do feel
encouraged to speak up!

For my part, I'm mostly just sitting back on this one, and watching to see
what happens. This experiment is not my project.

Ah, so you mean we actually use GTP for receiving some translations? I
wonder how this would work now that we don't seem to use PO files

active Rosegarden translators, are marked as "external" so that no one of
the GTP needs to work on them. Maybe these 0% are also the result of their
problems.

I would suggest to wait a bit until they could control the robot again ...

GTP for translation

Hi,

Earlier today I got notification that both 1.7.3 and 10.01 are
available for translation into Russian via GNU Translation Project,
both with 0% readiness, which is *a little* misleading and all in all
*quite a little* unexpected.

What am I missing again?

Doesn't work in Classic either. Dragging a note from one segment to another
is effectively the same thing as deleting the note. This is probably related
to the way it is only possible to select events from one segment at a time,
and similar architectural limitations.

I'd actually love to think up a way to solve all of that, so you could sweep
select across multiple staffs, and pick up all the events from different
overlapping segments at the same time, then drag or paste them somewhere else.
It would require deep changes, and is definitely out of scope.

they don't seem to get transposed, but they do.

I ported this code so it compiles, but it doesn't work. That's why it's still ifdef'd
out.

You forgot that dragging notes across segments in notation doesn't work.

Pitch reporter seems to always return octave -2 now. :)

Matrix bugs holding up alpha3

High priority matrix bugs:

* Draw a segment, open in notation, draw a note. Open a second notation and a
matrix view. Go back to the first notation view and transpose the note. The
secondary notation view picks up the change, but the matrix does not. This is

* Shift+click on the piano keyboard to select all notes of that pitch.
Shift+click and drag to sweep select. Neither of these works.

* Vertical autoscroll while sweep selecting is WAY THE HELL TOO FAST. It's
really unusable like this.

I can. It's a bug in Qt, but I think we can work around it (the crash
is in a deprecated function which can be replaced with its intended
replacement). Stand by.

Good catch, Jani.

Where I come down on adding missing tr() calls late in the release process is
that if you spot a missing translation, you should fix it then and there,
string freeze or no string freeze. Strings are never so frozen that we can't
fix developer errors, and missing translation calls are developer errors.

It makes no difference to the end user, and offers the greatest chance of the
string being translated properly for the next release.

In this case, I've taken your discovery as a hint that I should look at all
the commands, and I've found several of them with the same problem. I was
already planning to look into a different translation issue first thing
tonight, and I think I'll just go knock all of this out while it's in front of
me.

Notation:

* dragging selected notation elements doesn't work
* ctrl+shift dragging to fine position selected notation elements doesn't work
* the status bar is all to hell, but the pitch reporter is arguably the most
useful missing bit
* there's an absolutely terrible drawing glitch that prevents key signatures
from being visible most of the time (and neither Chris nor I have a clue yet
why, which is very bad)

Rosegarden 10.02-ALPHA 2 released

Kind of a whimper of a release this time. I didn't write a new release note
or put together a list of everything we fixed and so on, or try to write up
some formal testing procedure.

alpha2 mostly concentrated on translation problems, the notation editor, and
some last-minute work on audio file naming conventions.

There are still three very serious notation bugs we can't release with, and I
am counting on Chris Cannam to solve at least two of them. I'm moving out of
notation, and I'm going to give the matrix the same treatment notation just
got, and this will be alpha3. Hopefully I can get this done within a week, as
there is much less to do here.

The primary objective for alpha3 is to get every last dusty corner of missing
functionality restored to the matrix, so that any lingering new strings for
translation are flushed out of hiding once and for all. Until that point, I
will not promise no new strings, but I do promise that I will do everything I
can to handle any changes I have to make to existing strings myself. When I
had to make a large round of changes between alpha1 and alpha2, I updated all
of the most current translations myself. I am painfully aware of what every
string change means from here, and I am doing the absolute bare minimum I have
to do when changes are unavoidable.

After alpha3, I will do a thorough feature review of the main window and
everything leading off of there, which is pretty much everything else in
Rosegarden. I'm saving this for last because I hope it will be the easiest
one to do in terms of turning up new release-critical bugs. I've found a
number of last minute main-window problems through the notation review, and
I'm feeling generally good about how that one will fare. After the main
window review, we enter beta, and we're getting into beta before December is
over come Hell or high water.

That will give us at least six weeks of beta before the release date arrives,
and we will release on February 14th, 2010 unless I'm dead or incapacitated.

Notation bugs for Thorn

There are a number of things I'm just going to defer until Abraham Darby for
various reasons. Some of them are fairly nice to have, but they aren't
critical. All the critical stuff in notation appears to be up and going after
this last round of slot fixes, except for:

BUG You should be able to click on a note to select it, then start dragging it
around.

BUG Shift+click+drag to micro-position does not work

BUG Add a key change, try to select the key signature, and it disappears! WTF?

The first two, I'm leaving to Chris to sort out. I don't even remember why,
but we talked about it, and I threw them on a list of things I really needed
him to look at himself to spare me untold hours of agony, and he accepted the
challenge. I'm hoping for the best.

The disappearing key change, both Chris and I have dug into that one and come
up scratching our heads. This one really is a bastard. We've got to fix it
somehow before release, but damn if I know how.

I tried hard to grab stuff and I dug around quite a bit (about this time a year ago actually). But with no running code -- 10,000 compile errors, there was just no way for a RG code newbie to have known all the things to look for.

Looks like Julie just missed these. There were a bunch of things created with
KAction() calls and she moved all of that stuff into the .rc files to
createAction() them with all the new stuff. These just look to have been
overlooked, or even deleted by accident somewhere along the way. Who knows.

Fixed. I added the more useful of the two actions to the group toolbar as
well, for better exposure of this useful feature. It's not a group function,
but who cares. I'm not creating a new toolbar for one action.

Uh....

No. They must be why hitting Ctrl+. to cycle dots on a selected note doesn't
work. Good that you mentioned it and I thought about that, because I missed
it in my big feature review, and this one is useful and important.

No idea where they used to be, but with names like that, my first instinct is
they might have been in EditView and shared between notation and matrix. The
last batch of stuff I rescued was from EditView.

I'm not going to look into it at the moment. Must sleep soon.

If you haven't built this in a good while, Alexandre, try "make distclean" and
bootstrap.sh and configure again and see if that gets you out of it. Off
hand, it looks like that probably will.

Oops, I meant to send that directly to Vlada and not the entire list.

Oh well.

Anyway, the patch is in. I had to fiddle with it to get it to apply, but I
think it's all good now.

Sounds like QCharSelect. KDE 4 broke KCharSelect for my purposes and made it
nicer to use for normal situations, and impossible for figuring out what codes
to use to add new glyphs (like coda) to Rosegarden. I forked the old
QCharSelect from KDE 3, did the absolute minimum necessary to get it up and
usable, and left it sitting there with more bugs than you can shake a stick
at; some of really horrible.

It works well enough to do what I needed it for, and I'm bored now.

I'm in the middle of cooking Thanksgiving dinner, Vlada, so bump me in a day
or two if I forget your patch again. I tend to forget things unless I deal
with them right then and there.

Make that two or three days. I have to be at work at 4:00 in the damn morning
tomorrow to sell rich people things I can't even dream of affording while I
struggle to keep my house.

Bleargh.

But I may come back to this today and remember. I'm going to try.
